Tensions Escalate as Amethi Lawyers’ Protest Over Administrative Misconduct Enters Fourth Day
Tensions peak in Amethi as the Musafirkhana tehsil protest enters its fourth day. Local advocates are demanding accountability over alleged misconduct involving female officials and offensive social media activity. With heavy police deployment and a complete standstill in administrative operations, the standoff highlights a growing crisis in regional governance.
At the center of the unrest is a series of serious allegations leveled by the Bar Association against the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). Protesting advocates claim that the sanctity of the administrative office has been compromised by incidents of misconduct involving female lekhpals (revenue officers). The lawyers have alleged that inappropriate behavior and the transmission of offensive messages via social media platforms have created a hostile work environment, sparking a demand for immediate accountability and systemic reform within the tehsil’s leadership.
The persistence of the agitation has forced the state’s hand, leading to a massive mobilization of law enforcement. The premises, usually bustling with civil litigation and administrative filings, now more closely resemble a military cantonment. Under the supervision of the Circle Officer (CO), personnel from multiple police stations have been deployed to maintain a tenuous peace. While the slogans and demonstrations continue to echo through the corridors of power, police officials maintain that they are acting as a buffer to ensure the safety of all parties involved.
As the deadlock continues, senior police leadership and administrative mediators are reportedly engaged in back-channel efforts to de-escalate the friction. Authorities have officially stated that while the situation remains tense, it is currently under control, with ongoing attempts to facilitate a dialogue between the aggrieved advocates and the administration. The prolonged strike has not only paralyzed judicial and land revenue work in the region but has also cast a spotlight on the volatile relationship between the executive and the legal fraternity in rural Uttar Pradesh.
